The short answer
If a mutual fund app shuts down, the closure does not by itself cancel mutual fund units already allotted to you. The official record sits in an AMC folio for SOA holdings or a depository account for demat holdings. You may still need another access route and must check whether future SIP debits will continue.
What happens to your mutual funds if the app shuts down?
If a mutual fund app shuts down, the closure does not by itself cancel units already allotted to you. The official record remains in an asset management company (AMC) folio for Statement of Account holdings or in a depository account for demat holdings. You may still need a new way to view or transact in the investment.
This answer assumes that a valid mutual fund transaction was completed and units were allotted. A pending payment, rejected order, unauthorised transaction or fake investment app is a different problem and needs evidence from the bank, AMC, registrar or depository.
The investment also keeps its normal market risk. An app closing does not fix a loss, guarantee a return or protect the value of the underlying mutual fund scheme.
Are mutual fund units stored inside the app?
No. The app may show your balance and accept transaction instructions, but the screen is not the official ownership record. Your units are recorded outside that consumer interface.
For a non-demat holding, commonly called Statement of Account or SOA form, units are recorded under a folio in the mutual fund’s Unit Holders’ Register. AMFI’s Investor Service FAQs, accessed in September 2026, compare a folio number with an account number and explain that it records the units held in a mutual fund scheme.
For a demat holding, the units appear in an account maintained through a depository participant (DP) with NSDL or CDSL. CDSL’s Investor Charter, updated on 5 June 2026, describes a depository as the organisation that holds investors’ securities in electronic form.
Roz Invest’s ownership-record rule is simple: the app can disappear, but the ownership record does not live inside the app. Finding that record is the first step when access is lost.
How do SOA and demat holdings differ if an app closes?
SOA holdings remain connected to AMC folios, while demat holdings remain connected to the investor’s depository account. The recovery channel therefore depends on the holding mode, not only on the name of the app that closed.
| Question | SOA mutual funds | Demat mutual funds |
|---|---|---|
| Where are units recorded? | In folios maintained for the AMC | In the depository account |
| Useful identifiers | Folio number, PAN and holding pattern | DP ID, client ID, ISIN and account holder details |
| Who maintains investor records? | The AMC and its registrar and transfer agent (RTA) | The depository through the DP |
| Where else might you check access? | AMC, RTA, MFCentral or another supported platform | DP, depository portal or another DP after an eligible transfer |
| Is redemption automatically required? | No | No |
SEBI’s RTA guide, accessed in September 2026, says RTAs maintain mutual fund investor records, process transactions and handle investor queries. For demat accounts, CDSL’s charter says investors can receive account statements and use depository internet facilities to monitor holdings.
An app may support SOA, demat or both. Do not infer the holding mode from the logo. Check an official account statement or Consolidated Account Statement (CAS).
How can you find your mutual funds without the old app?
Start with an independent statement rather than recreating the old dashboard from memory. A current CAS can show mutual fund transactions across fund houses and securities held in demat accounts, subject to the statement’s rules and the investor details being correctly linked.
SEBI’s CAS guide, accessed in September 2026, describes the CAS as a combined statement of mutual fund transactions and other securities held in demat accounts. AMFI’s CAS guidance, accessed the same month, says investors can request an electronic CAS through CAMS or KFintech and can view mutual fund portfolios through MFCentral.
Once you have the statement, identify:
- the investor name and Permanent Account Number (PAN);
- whether the holding is SOA or demat;
- the AMC and exact scheme, plan and option;
- the folio number or DP and client details;
- the unit balance and recent transactions; and
- the registered email, mobile number and bank details.
If you want to start using a different platform, follow the separate process for transferring mutual funds or accessing them through another app. Simply installing a new app does not guarantee that every holding or transaction facility will appear.
Will an active SIP continue after the app shuts down?
Do not assume that future SIP debits will automatically stop or continue. The answer depends on how the systematic investment plan and bank mandate were registered, along with the closure arrangements made by the app, distributor, AMC or payment service.
An SIP instruction controls future purchases. Units bought through earlier instalments are existing holdings, so the status of the next debit does not decide whether those units still exist.
Check these records separately:
- the platform’s closure communication;
- the SIP registration shown by the AMC or RTA;
- the bank or payment mandate linked to the SIP;
- recent debit and allotment confirmations; and
- any deadline for changing, cancelling or registering instructions elsewhere.
Avoid registering a replacement SIP until you know whether the existing one remains active, unless two debits are intentional. The guide to what an SIP is and how recurring purchases work explains why the payment instruction and the mutual fund units are separate.
Do you need to withdraw your mutual funds when an app closes?
No, an app closure does not automatically require redemption. Another AMC, RTA, depository or supported platform route may provide access to the same units without selling them.
Redemption changes the investment itself. It can lock in a market gain or loss, attract an exit load under the scheme’s rules and create a tax consequence. Changing the screen used to view the same holding does none of those things by itself.
Before selling, identify what you are trying to solve:
| Problem | Possible next step to investigate | Does it require selling? |
|---|---|---|
| Old app no longer opens | Obtain an official statement and identify the holding mode | No |
| SOA holding needs a new access channel | Contact the AMC or RTA, or check a supported platform | Not normally |
| Demat holding needs a different DP | Check the depository and DP transfer process | Not normally |
| Cash is needed in the bank account | Submit a valid redemption through an available channel | Yes |
| Scheme itself is being wound up | Follow the AMC, trustee and regulatory process | The scheme’s assets are dealt with under that process |
If you actually need cash rather than a new access route, read what happens when you withdraw money invested through an SIP before placing the transaction.
Is an app closing the same as an AMC or mutual fund scheme closing?
No. An app is an interface or transaction channel, an AMC manages mutual fund schemes, and a scheme is the investment vehicle in which unitholders own units. A failure or closure at one level does not automatically mean the same thing happened at the others.
| Event | What changed | What the investor needs to establish |
|---|---|---|
| App is temporarily unavailable | The access screen | Whether transactions can be placed through another official channel |
| Platform or distributor closes | A service relationship or access channel | Holding mode, official record and status of future instructions |
| Depository participant terminates service | The intermediary connected to a demat account | The depository’s process for moving securities to another DP |
| AMC is acquired or stops managing a scheme | The scheme manager or structure | The official communication, options and effective date |
| Mutual fund scheme is wound up | The scheme itself enters a regulated closure process | How assets, liabilities, expenses and investor payments will be handled |
SEBI’s FAQs for Mutual Fund Investors, updated to 31 August 2024, explain that a mutual fund is structured as a trust with trustees, an AMC and a custodian. The same FAQ says that when a scheme is wound up, its assets are disposed of and the balance after liabilities and winding-up expenses is paid to unitholders in proportion to their interests.
That is different from losing access to an app. Do not use a headline about an AMC, broker or app to infer what happened to your own scheme without checking the official notice.
What records should you save before an app has a problem?
Keep records that can establish both ownership and future payment instructions without depending on one app login. Current statements and matching contact details make it easier to trace a holding and receive official notices.
Save or periodically check:
- the latest CAS;
- AMC or RTA statements for SOA folios;
- NSDL or CDSL statements for demat holdings;
- transaction and unit-allotment confirmations;
- scheme, plan, option, folio and ISIN details;
- SIP registrations and bank mandates;
- nominee or nomination-status information; and
- registered email, mobile number and bank details.
Store copies securely. Never share a password, one-time password (OTP), transaction PIN or blank signed instruction with someone offering to recover the investment. CDSL’s June 2026 charter tells investors to keep account statements, check every debit and credit, and avoid sharing passwords or OTPs.
What should you do if the official records do not match?
Compare the identifiers before treating an absent dashboard entry as a missing investment. If the official records still disagree, raise the issue first with the AMC, RTA, DP or other entity responsible for that record and keep the acknowledgement.
Check for common causes such as:
- a different folio or holding mode;
- a name, PAN or holding-pattern mismatch;
- an old email address or mobile number;
- a transaction that was placed but never allotted;
- a scheme, plan or option displayed under a different label; or
- an account statement covering a period with no relevant transaction.
AMFI says investors should contact the respective mutual fund or registrar when a portfolio with an updated PAN is missing from the CAS. SEBI’s August 2024 FAQ says investors should first approach the mutual fund or Investor Service Centre. Unresolved complaints can be escalated through the SEBI Complaints Redress System, known as SCORES.
Use only official contact details. A search result, social-media reply or incoming call is not enough to establish that someone represents the AMC, RTA, depository or SEBI.
What is the simplest rule to remember?
Follow the ownership record, not the app icon. If an app closes, identify whether the units are in an AMC folio or a depository account, verify them through an official statement and check future SIP instructions separately.
An app shutdown can create inconvenience and may require action, but it is not itself a mutual fund redemption or a scheme winding-up. Understanding how mutual funds, units and NAV work makes the difference easier to see.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my mutual funds if the investment app shuts down?
The app's closure does not by itself cancel mutual fund units already allotted to you. SOA units remain recorded in AMC folios, while demat units remain in the depository account. You may need another supported channel to view or transact in them.
What if Groww or another mutual fund app shuts down?
First check whether your units are held in Statement of Account or demat form. The company name on the app does not establish the holding mode. Use an AMC, RTA, CAS or depository statement to identify the official record and the available access route.
Are mutual fund units stored inside the app?
No. An app can display and help transact in mutual funds, but the official record is maintained in an AMC folio for SOA holdings or in a depository account for demat holdings. A dashboard is not the ownership record.
Will my SIP continue if the app closes?
It depends on how the SIP and payment mandate were registered and what the closing platform arranges. Existing units are separate from future instalments. Check the AMC, RTA, bank mandate and closure notice instead of assuming that debits will stop or continue.
Do I need to redeem my mutual funds if the app shuts down?
Not automatically. SOA holdings may be accessible through an AMC, RTA or another supported platform, while demat holdings may be accessed through the depository participant. Redemption is a sale and can have market, exit-load and tax consequences.
How can I find mutual funds that no longer appear in an app?
Obtain a current Consolidated Account Statement and compare it with AMC, RTA or depository statements. Match the investor name, PAN, folio or demat details, scheme, plan, option and unit balance before concluding that a holding is missing.
Is an app shutting down the same as a mutual fund scheme closing?
No. An app is an access channel, an AMC manages schemes, and the scheme owns the investment portfolio for its unitholders. SEBI has a separate process for winding up a scheme, including disposing of assets and distributing the balance after liabilities and expenses.
